Taco Seasoning Mix Recipe
Making taco seasoning mix is only difficult if you don’t have the ingredients. Chance are you probably don’t have a packet of taco seasoning either. So, since you’re heading to the grocery store, you might as well pick up the stuff to make your own. Better yet, order from a reputable spice monger; my favorite is The Spice House (in fact, I’m waiting on a delivery as I type; no I am not paid for this bit o’praise; yes, they do have coupons!). It’s infinitely customizable, has far less salt, and no additives. You truly won’t be disappointed and you’ll wonder how you lived without this knowledge for so long.
This is the homemade taco seasoning mix recipe that I use in my Pita Pocket Stuffers.
Ingredients
This isn’t rocket science but a few quick notes on ingredients:
Garlic powder and onion powder can be subbed out quite nicely for dehydrated bits of the same. Just increase the amount by half or double it (1 tsp granulated = 1.5 or 2 tsp bits).
Chili powder in this taco seasoning mix recipe is the AP Mexican variety. This gives the supermarket packet flavor I’m going for (sans the fillers and preservatives, natch). If you use a specific chili powder (think ancho or chipotle), you’ll get a whole other – albeit tasty – profile.
Make ahead? Yes, of course! I general triple or quadruple (depending on what I see on my kitchen horizons). I use this spice blend a lot so can tell you it lasts at least two months in a sealed jar (see below). Beyond that, I’d imagine it’s good for a while but like all spices will mute as time passes.
Things it’s good for? Tacos (low hanging fruit, eh?), pita pocket stuffers (recipe above), dips (seven layer dip IS still a thing!), spice addition to a spicy mayo, seasoning for a salad dressing (vinaigrette or sour cream based), as a chicken rub (never tried it; just spit-balling here), in Mexican rice … so many ways to give your dinner table a little shazaam boom bah.
I hope you enjoy this “recipe” customized to your taste buds. If you make it, please let me know below in the comments and/or give me a hollah on Instagram at @piecrustandpasta and/or #piecrustandpasta.
Enjoy!
